seeing more of the same today - ~15-20 seconds of dead air every 10-15 mins or so...
OK, scratch that - more like ~10-15 sec dead air every 5 mins right now...

Yeah. Made a point to check in more often today and I see what you mean. Right now it's seems down due to too many users on the database...
*sigh*

Its too many users connected to our host. That's all of the sites on the host, not just ours.

Ah, gotcha. Gotta love shared hosting. If I ever win the lottery, we'll have a dedicated server.

How much does a dedicated server cost?

Ballpark - just checked at GoDaddy - $89 per month (on contract) for bare-bones dedicated hosting. LOL - also in their product lineup, I'm curious what the difference is between "shared hosting" and "virtual dedicated hosting"

Your guess is as good as mine. I'm sure it's not much of a difference. $90 per month is a bit of a step up from the $7-$8 a month I pay for what we have. Would probably need to up the cost of donor bonuses a bit... $50 per version for donor bonuses?

Ouch!! Thats a lot!! How hard would it be to have your own server? would that be a possibility? (I am sure that ya'll have already thought up anything I could, and rejected it for obvious reasons... just trying to help...

Building/buying my own webserver would likely be a couple thousand dollar investment*. Plus, I'd have to upgrade my Internet services to a business level plan, a SIGNIFICANT increase from what I have now.
The reality is we're kinda stuck with what we have now. My contract with the host goes for another year+ anyways, so it'd take some pretty good convincing to get me to switch. Just need to stay on the host about keeping things running smoothly.
*EDIT: Yeah, I could set up a simple LAMP box that could handle things, but if I was gonna self-host, I'd want to do it right. Reliable machine and some backup redundancy incase of server crashes/power outages.

right, that makes sense... Like I said, I didn't really know what I was talking about... lol! It does seem like you have thought of pretty much everything.. yea, a couple thousand is a bit much out of a community such as ours... loyal, yes, rollin in the dough.. not so much... lol! (If I ever hit the lottery, ill give ya enough to do it right! LOL)
