I've noticed this kind of thing kicked around a lot (equiping helms, boots, gloves, jewelry, etc) and got to thinking about different ways to do it.
One of the things that's bothered me as I was setting up the shops was that there are so many options for main hand equipment and so few for the off hand. It's knives or shields and their aren't even many shields. So here's an idea I've been kicking around to give people a lot more options without overly complicating the stats stuff.
Leave armor and main hand alone (though perhaps add more armor options). Instead of the off hand, have two 'accessories' slots. These could be filled with knives, shields, helms, boots, gloves, jewelry, ter'angreal, or maybe even other types. If I added some of these new types I'd probably only have 6-7 of each. You could only equip one of a type at a time (ie. can't equip two sets of knives at once). Each accessory type would have its own special thing it does (like bludgeons add defense as well) to increase the variety.
I'm not saying this will happen, or even that I'm fully behind the idea. Just a suggestion I'm throwing out there. Who says I can't make suggestions for my own game?

How fun! I think it's a good idea.

that would be cool.
and i think it would be fun to have a big selection of items. and you could make different combinations.
tad off topic but: were did the original art come from(weapons, armors, people, ect)? out of curiosity.

So you wouldn't be able to equip two sets of knives at once, but you would be able to have a sword, a knife and a shield equipped at the same time?
How would boots, for example, differ from a shield?

I love this idea. After all, how many people actually fight with multiple weapons at once?
I don't want to pressure you about this, Tim (since it's hardly important in the grand scheme of things) but, please, please, please do this.

I just think it's silly to have a Claymore in one hand and a dagger in the other. Nobody actually does that.

This system wouldn't preclude you from doing that though. But it would let you use a claymore in one hand, a dagger somewhere else, and also carry a shield. Who does THAT?

Well, I personally would carry a Claymore in my hands, a shield on my back, a sword and dagger at my belt, and a couple throwing knives in my boots.
It's not the number of slots, it's WHERE they are.... *nudge nudge*

Yes, but the slots don't mean you'll only use the claymore at certain points and the knife at other points.
If you attack while wearing a claymore, a dagger, and a shield, you'll still get the damage from the knife. Doesn't matter if it's in an accessory slot or the offhand slot.

Yeah, but psychologically it does. and besides, I don't have a problem with how many more additives. In fact, the more the batter. It makes stuff more customizable, which is always good in my book.
And FF, I'd put it more along the lines of a (hands) slot, (belt) slot, and (back/body) slot. hands - claymore belt - dagger back - shield

oh ok....
<random> you could have a way of using 1 weapon for an attack?
like. um....
i would use my bow for Cat Dances on the Wall and Courtier Taps His Fan and my throwing knives with Watered Silk...
and armor would always be on hand. and maybe shield too. or you could make a separate set of defense moves that you upgrade like the attack moves. then you could set a shield to it.
like Watered Silk is a def. move so why is it you use it to attack? </random>
or is that just dumb?
