Hiya Tintomara! Good to see you finding your way back here again.
I like a lot of the ideas that are coming out (anonymous darkfriends working in small groups to further their goals; df/non-df quests at higher levels; Bonus skills for higher level dfs/non-dfs), but agree with Tintomara that so far most of the perks have been geared towards DFs. What can we do to make people want to be a non-darkfriend? Needs to be a balance.
To elaborate/combine some of the ideas suggested, what if at level 20/25 you had to chose a side: Light or Shadow. No being neutral beyond that point, and only players who are active enough to get that high get to choose. Prevents throw away characters getting in the way at the end.
Those who choose Shadow can pick an alias. Like 'Bors' had, to keep things anonymous. DFs will be randomly placed in one of 7 or so 'cells' (might have to come up with a better name). No changing. The first players in the cell are put in charge, though I think leadership in cells should be fluid (lots of backstabbing and trickery. Cell would have a message board like clans, but maybe not update as often. Maybe only put new posts out once every hour or 2. That way it's harder to figure out who's who by looking at when they're online. Cells would work together to undermine towns and the efforts of those of the Light.
There won't be cells for non-darkfriends, so we need to come up with something equally intriguing. Also needs to be something that's not as obvious that people aren't receiving though, otherwise it will be obvious who is not a darkfriend.
Perhaps each town is trying to get prepared for the Last Battle. They need food stores, arms, fortifications, and supplies. Those who are for the Light try to build these up. Those for the Shadow bring them down. Those who serve the Light can coordinate efforts through clans or chat, and darkfriends get the benefit of hearing in and counter planning in their cells, but they don't know who they are planning with, which can make it more difficult. Building/sabatoging will take some turns to do, so there will be sacrifice involved for their character, but perks will be earned. For perks on for each side, I think both sides should be able to earn similar perks so that neither side gets an unfair advantage or is too attractive for players to join.
Perhaps around level 40-50 or so, players have a very small chance (1 in 5000 or so) of finding a seal to the Dark One's prison until all 7 have been found. Might make the chance of finding them increase at higher levels just so they don't take TOO long to find. The players that hold them will be marked and receive some bonus, but therefore will have a target on there back. Since darkfriends are anonymous, no one will know for sure how many the Light holds and how many the Shadow holds. How many seals each side holds will be important when the Last Battle hits somehow.
Glad to see such good discussion. Lots of good ideas. We just need more balance between the sides, which is hard to do. If everyone wants to be on one side, there won't be much fun involved for very long.
