a little bit of sarcasm in my ~ch30 post - actually cheering for Perrin again after the showdown with Slayer and that priceless moment between him and Egwene. oh, yeah, Mat and Rand did some stuff in the stretch since ch28, too. What was it? Rand showed up late for a fight, and Mat pushed somebody down like a big bully. Yeah, what bums. Actually, as cool as Mat's dispatch of the gholam was, it felt a little... lacking... to me. Almost too easy. Maybe it's just a matter of perspective: Perrin mopes-Perrin prepares to think about a fight-Perrin thinks about a fight-Perrin dodges a fight-Mat kills the dang gholam-Perrin finds another fight-Perrin says "hi" to Egwene-Perrin makes bad-ass hammer-Perrin finds another fight... I'm guessing/hoping Mat gets his turn to really kick ass at Ghenji, though, so I'll wait sort of patiently...

hmmm. "Mjǫllnir" - not as close as I suspected for the name of Thor's hammer. Oh well... Meanwhile, though, a big "hell yeah!!!!" for instincts and Asha'man and shiny new power-forged toys

LOL Thor's hammer? I hadn't even thought of that. I actually liked the fight with the gholam formerly known as Michael Jackson. Until Mat pulled out the other two medallions. Then it felt a little too easy. They're not perfect, and can only stop small stuff, so I assumed it wouldn't be able to stop him. I thought this cause it probably wasn't a small weave that made him.

His hammer did seem to do extra damage to shadowspawn. And I'm sure the other foxheads didn't hurt him as much. However, to a being who thought it couldn't be hurt...there wouldn't be much difference between a sword cut and a dagger cut.

Yeah, there are a couple mentions that the hammer does burn Trollocs, so it's reacting to Shadowspawn. Gotta love it. As far as Thor, not too many big bad-ass hammers in history, so it seemed like another spot for a subtle real-world tie-in (like "zemai" and "sa'angreal" and "Shai'tan"), but the name's not as close as I would've thought, so dunno if it's supposed to be one or not.

I think it's close enough that it likely is a reference to Thor's hammer. Different enough to fit with the rest of the references, but close enough you know what it's supposed to be. The books are littered with things like this. The 13th Depository blog has all sorts of real world parrallels listed. Check it out some time if you're interested.
