This thread is for the discussion of "The Nature of Pain". The audio book version of it is available at tor.com.
Just finished listening. I thought it was really good. Sounded like Egwene (meaning the writing style, not the audio. ). Her progression has continued quite nicely and I'm finding Egwene to be one of my favorite characters, especially among the girls. Embracing the little victories and reallizing that above all she must keep the Tower whole. Removing Elaida shouldn't be her main goal (though still an important one), as I believe she's right that Elaida will do that well enough herself. She's making headway among some of the Reds that Elaida is damaging the Tower (something most know, but are too afraid/stubborn to do anything about).
Will be interested to see if her upcoming meeting with the spies will pull her into the BA hunters? Definately has potential there, especially with her new goals. Would they make/allow her to swear the 3 Oaths? She'd have to do a lot of convincing there I think, but if she could sway them, she'd have influence over a good chunk of the WT Hall. Lots of possibilities.
The way the pattern is 'unraveling' has always bothered me. Before the Strike at Shayol Ghul, the Bore was open for quite a while, yet I don't remember seeing anything to indicate that similar occurances were happening during the War of Power. The DO should have been able to much more freely touch the world then than now, yet we are seeing quite dramatic effect. Is it simply that these things did happen in the War of Power and we weren't shown this, or is there something else going on? Has the size of the Bore itself eroded to be larger over the last age? Were thing things in place in the AoL to partially combat this? Is the weakened Seal of the DO's prison actualy HELPING him touch the world? What's the deal? Or am I just missing something?
