Tim, i guess you plan to keep taint in the next combat system, because its an important part on the books, the problem with taint right now, is that its only good at lower levels, when defense matters, and you can survive many attacks... but the good taint talismans are all high lvl drops, which means that when they start to drop, you dont want to use them, leaving tons of uselss talismans. In the other hand, would make more sense that taint became more important at higher levels than at lower... since the battles should last longer... (its not the case right now) So, i was going to suggest that you make taint in that sense, that its more important at higher levels, so, the taint talis at higher levels would be ok. But its really a suggestion that combat should last longer as you progress in levels, and that will take care of taint.

i agree with Ger that the higher level you are the longer the battle should take
i remember a scene in knife of dreams where a blademaster and one almost blademaster battled for almost half of day.....

I remember a GoS version very very long ago when you got more exp the more attacks you did in a fight. That would make attacks long and agility very useful. full agility on offensive items and talismans of madmen on the defensive equipment xD

Fights last plenty long...if both are archers. That is one thing that is starting to annoy me, lower lv's (from 1-30) you can't really lose when your an archer but as soon as a lv 40 melee comes through they deal an easy 500 doing only maybe 30 to themselves when you are lucky to pull off 200. I use to use taint but I have noticed it's useless now at lv 38. People only heal what auto damage you do to them and if they have agi up the butt four attacks on their hand is easy for them leaving your nice darkness absolutely useless

Taint is staying in, but will be changing. Still haven't decided the final changes for it, but it's not gonna stay exactly the same. I agree that at high levels unless you have ridiculously high taint, it ain't really worth it. Another balancing issues.

Is it also at all possible to think of balancing range a little bit with Melee? Cause seems as soon as you hit lv 40 and a ranger you mean nothing...so what you suppose to just kill a bunch of low lv's with a lot of gold so you don't lv? That's what it seems like you need to do is all.

Of course I'll be balancing melee and ranged out! It'd be silly to go through all this rework an not do that. My hopes is to make all weapon types more balanced.

hmmmm, i only played the version before this one but i did quite good with my ranged char against high levels..... i think i had a lucky ruby dagger of something, lucky gpb of wildmen and lucky warriorsbow of prosperity then, being lev 80+ and killing pretty much everything above me up till daenerys at lev. 140

Since the weapon power stops at some point, but the health stats continue to rise - it does balance out again - right?
But I don't know if we are going to get that high a level before a reset...?

That's what it seems like you need to do is all. You are not using the right setup, the archers can do more than enough damage, not only that, they can do it while having tons of xp bonus, while the best melee fighters combos have no xp bonus or 5%... Check Lord Kaldar, he is 2 lvls ahead of the second ranked and he is an archer... Padain has a good ranking aswell, i created Mayel 3 days after the age started, and he is in the top 10, and wins 99% of his attacks with 25% xp bonus... all are archers.
