With the release of the new WoT book, I'd ask you all to keep any TGS spoilers confined to the Gathering Storm discussion board. Also no spoilers in the titles of the treads please. This isn't really a book discussion site (though I encourage such discussion if you want it), so people looking to avoid spoilers may not think to find any here. So if you want to avoid spoilers till after you read it (like I do), it might be best to avoid the Gathering Storm discussion board until finished.
If I find any spoilers posted on any other board or in the title of any thread, I'll deleted it. Not move it to the proper area. Just plain delete it. Think of it as punishment for spoiling (or potentially spoiling) the book for others. After the books been out for a while, I'll make a post saying that TGS info is fair game. Probably won't be for a few months though and really, all TGS discussion should go on the TGS discusson board anyways.
If anyone wants to post spoiler free reviews of the book, go ahead and post them in this thread. Spoilerific review can go elsewhere.

My thoughts so far, 275 pages in (no spoilers, but I will mention some of the characters in the book so far):
In general, I'm really enjoying the book. Pace doesn't drag as thing keep happening, often not the things you'd expect to happen next. I think this is also helped by the fact that so far no two chapters in a row have had the same POV. There's even been a few POV's we haven't had so far and quite a few from someone who's view we've seen surprisingly little of considering how big a player they are. I've been enjoying this and I think it was a good move on BS's part, he really is telling the story from a new view itself. Also went to confirm to me that someone isn't a darkfriend as a few have suspected/feared (not a popular theory, but I've heard it from a few).
Overall, I'd say the characters sound like the characters. The one exception might have to be Rand, but given what we've seen of him lately, it likely isn't just the new author that's giving him a different feel. Egwene's continuing to shine for me though, which is something I still find surprising given how I used to feel about her character.
LOTS of things are happening. Things appear to be working well for the Light, but I have the feeling the other shoe's about to drop. I don't think the Shadow will take these things lying down. Just finished a big 'Oh Snap!' moment, at least in my opinion. Had me literally laughing out loud (though I was trying unsuccessfully not to as it was 1:30 AM and didn't want to wake my sleeping wife).
My biggest gripe so far would have to be that chronologically the book is a bit hard to follow. With the changing POV's, it jumps from one storyline, to another that would likely have happened weeks later, back to something that happened before the first one. The individual story lines themselves are cohesive, but seeing someone talk about something that happened 2 weeks ago very early in the book, only to get a POV from another person that happens 1 day after that event... It's bothersome to me, but others might not care as much. So far it hasn't effected things, but will be interesting to see when these storylines merge.

I'm only about 230 pages in as of 3am last night - I'm glad to hear that I'm not imagining the timeline hopscotch (you referring to the Perrin and Tylee scenes?). Loving the story progression, but noticing occasional details that feel off - like in the prologue, Thulin the smith is headed north because there'll be an army, and they'll need smiths. So, why would he leave his best anvil and best tools buried at home, and load the wagon with furniture?  Not disliking the story or writing - just noticing that it's maybe not as polished as I'm used to in this series... |

I finished the book 2 days ago. Hadn't been able to read a much as I wanted. But i can happily say i extremely enjoy where the book took us and where it is going. Things are seeming to tie up nicely.
with character changes, the only thing i noticed is that Mat felt a little different in his humor/the way he talks. Mat is my favorite character, so it may be only that is the reason im looking for flaws.

Book 13 is Towers of Midnight. Comes out next November.
A lot of people felt that way about Mat.

Book 14 (the last book) will be call A Memory of Light, just like Jordan wanted.

yeah brandon sanderson could stop writing WoT. but then he would have to deal with an angry mob (which i would be a part of) and then it would get uncomfortable cuz what could we do? he would still write great books. not THATS a dilemma. ;D but seriously, if he stops writing WoT (before the last one) who will join the mob with me?  |
