To go all example-y: when a 12th-grader takes away the 1st-grader's lunch money, does he actually gain any experience by stealing from the little kid? Does he lose some respect in the eyes of his peers for being a bully?
I checked the Wiki, and noticed that XP is awarded for any wins, just reduced proportionally with lower-lvl opponents. Here's the suggestion - at some point, maybe ?10 down, actually stop awarding XP, and start subtracting XP, increasing the penalty the farther down you go.
If I understood the Wiki, the base XP for a duel is 20, and then adjusted -1 for each lvl down, as far as -15? Maybe make the adjustment -2 per lvl down, which cancels out any gain at 10 lvls down. From there on down, the adjustment would actually subtract 2 XP per level from the player. This way, sure, you can beat up the new char and take that pocket full of gold he's carrying, but you have to decide if the gold or the town points are worth it for the XP hit you're gonna take...
If someone were to serially abuse lower-lvl players, he could gradually be reduced back to their level, giving the low-lvls a chance for payback.
Also, I read the old thread about defense XP - that'd be nice, but I remember the abuse of that system. One thought - I can't remember if it was tried at some point or not - would be to award maybe 2 XP for a defense win, 1 XP for a loss? That way there'd be some (small) up-side to getting beaten up regularly, but not enough (hopefully) to be worth the hassle of abusing the system? Just a thought...
