Dunno, probably to make it look less like Go, and make the game a bit more complicated than it really is.
Personally (and i'm just going by memory here) i believe that there's a game called 'Shogi' (kind of like japanese chess) where you can capture your opponent's pieces and use them against him. I think the idea for the Fisher came from there since in Go you can't actually move your stones.
Just my two cents...

GO is awesome if you can find someone who can teach you. I have taught both my kids to play, one likes it and one doesn't.

The Fisher piece is from the game of sha'rah, that Moridin plays by himself in the prologue to PoD; it isn't from stones.

In my opinion I believe it is based off English chess. If you noticed alot of his world is based off Europe, so it stands to reason that he would base the games of that world off Europe as well.

its also based extremely on asia, which invented chess u know the helmets with the cresant moon, japanese is the closest thing with those helms, then katanas since european countries used double edged sword in shape of cross (straight sword with straight crossguard, very religous killer ) oh and people too, just cant think of with country is more asian, need to look it up. so i say about 50/50 on asia and europe. also, the dragons r based on asian dragon. european dragons R in WOT, just called different and seachan use them
