It's been almost a year since I decided to step back from the game and I feel it's time to reassess the situation. And the fact of the matter is it's not working. There are certain things in the game like managing alts, handling major moderation issues, and fixing bugs that only I have the power to do. And the sad fact is I don't have the will to do it anymore. When I see discord messages or emails about issues in the game, I've come to dread them. It really don't want to mess with it and I HATE myself for that. This game is my adopted baby and the way I'm doing the bare minimum feels like a disservice to it. With the WoT TV show coming next year, the game should be prepping to be a welcoming place for some new players. As much as I wish otherwise, I know I don't have it in me to do what's needed. So I've come to the conclusion I need to let it go.
This age will be the last one I host and manage. There will be some changes this age to reduce the amount you guy have to rely on me.
- No total number of alts limit
- No number of alts in a clan limit
- Donor bonuses for all.
Also, per request from many in the community:
- City Support between clans will be disabled.
My plan is to launch this age next weekend (February 2nd probably).
Once this age is over, there will be no more resets or future ages on the site. But in true Wheel of Time fashion, that doesn't mean this is the end. The Wheel will keep on turning.
As the original Creator did before me, I will be posting all of the code for the game online for anyone who wants it to take and do with what they will. Be warned, this is pet project code that was handled first exclusively by one person and then exclusively by another. There is little commenting and documentation, and it's admittedly pretty rough. I got it working, but never got around to the clean up I would have done in a professional environment.
My recommendations for significant things that should be improved:
- Upgrade mysql related PHP to be compatible with more current versions.
- Add additional moderation tools that can handle some issues without direct DB access.
- Add comments/doc as you figure things out so others have a chance of understanding it too.
I plan to post the code around the same time this new version launches to give time for new Creators to familiarize themselves with it. I hope someone (or multiple someones) out there has the drive and the knowledge to take control of things. Before anyone messages me though, no I won't send you and only you the code. I'm aware that could mean multiple copies of the game out there if multiple people want to work on in and don't wish to collaborate. But this is how the previous Creator handled things and I wish to follow that example. The wiki and this forum will stay up as long as it is still needed. Ideally once new sites are setup, a forum and wiki can be setup there to reflect the state of that version of the game and my versions will become obsolete.
Thank you all so much for your support over the years. I really can't thank you all enough. This has been a wild ride. And while this may not be THE ending, it is A ending.
Thanks Team!
