Quests in GoS are pretty cliche for your typical RPG. Go hunt some enemies down. Fetch me this item. Go attack this player. We almost have them all. Might as well add the missing one: Escort quests!
The trick with escort quests is how to handle them. Until now I don't think the game was well setup to handle them. But with the GUI changes from last age (and a new database I made this age), I think we're ready. So here's how it will work.
In an Escort quest, the player will have to travel from the city the quest is offered in to a target city, 'escorting' an NPC along a specific route. These route will be varying in length from "Quick" (8 travel steps), "Short" (16 steps), "Standard" (24 steps), "Winding" (32 steps), or "Scenic" (40 steps). These routes will be specified in advance and be the same for each player that takes the quest. They also will not repeat any locations (city or wilderness).
In order to escort these NPCs, the player will need to travel using a specific travel link that will appear in the travel menu for each escort quest you have active if you are in the same location as the NPC you are supposed to be escorting. The link will be named something like "Escort Master Al'car", so if you have multiple NPCs you're escorting in the same area, you can tell which one is which. You're free to travel using the normal links in the middle of these quests (stop off and buy/sell something or go fight a horde, etc), but progress will only be made in the quests if you use the links. If you ever get "lost", the current progress of each quest on your quest page will tell you where the NPC you're escorting currently is.
Seems easy so far. Too easy. Well, the NPCs aren't hiring you for eye candy! At least not JUST for that... Need to throw some fighting in there! Whenever you arrive in a wilderness area, the Escort travel link will change to something like "Defend Mistress Gera". Clicking this link will trigger a random NPC battle. An NPC must be defeated before you can move on. As an added wrinkle, for each NPC battle you lose while clicking on the "Defend" link you must win an additional battle before moving on. So if you lose a lot, you could be there a while. Once you have more wins than losses while defending, the "Defend" link will change back to "Escort" and you can continue on your way.
Once you finally arrive at your destination, it's time for your reward. A lot of quests give items, so how about we go with straight up coins! Escort quest pay will be 10cp x number of steps x level of the player.
One other random, cool difference with Escort quest. In all other quests, players receive a small Ji bonus in the city offering the quest. In Escort quests, the bonus applies to the city you END in, not starting in. Just to mix things up a bit.
