just caught another white-screen error message. it was temporary - worked on reload attempt. had a similar one-shot error at some point last night or earlier this morning. Something's still a little flaky...

another brief round (<10 secs) of "unable to connect", followed by extremely slow/stalled page loads (20 secs+, if successful at all)

Got a response from the host. Said the fixed an issue with their mysql server yesterday that would have caused the issues. Please let me know if you guys still notice any similar problems.
