Oh yeah. Mat's hilarious in the book. Just wait. There are even better lines.

The ramping-up of Mat's comedic value is one of the more obvious changes that I think Sanderson has brought into play. The other side of Sanderson are the things like "homicidal" and the string of "P.S." in Mat's letter - Jordan was always very deliberate and sparing with the familiar tidbits from "our" world that appeared in the story. Sanderson seems to be blurring the line more, and, unfortunately, these things kind of jump out at me and momentarily distract me from the world because they just don't "feel" right... Not that he isn't doing a great job, it's all minor things just a little "off"...

Finally got to chapter 20. Work has been slowing down my reading time. But, I'm diggin it so far. I agree with you Kev, about the off-ness of some minor things, but as long as the gholam doesn't turn into MJ again, I can deal. Mat is definitely getting funnier. I think it's a great addition for BS. That whole Chapter where he goes to negotiate with Elayne is great. Though I'm not too sure I'm liking Elayne the Ambitious. I'm completely stunned though, that Nynaeve is getting slightly less annoying. Who'd have ever thought that? ;D One thing that kind of bothers me, though not enough to really distract me from the story, is these Dragons they're gonna build. Aludra just happens to be so smart, that they can skip hundreds of years worth of development, and go straight to Napoleonic era cannons. (The first cannons were monstrosities, that took days to move, and could only fire a few carved stone balls a DAY. ) This fact only bothers me for a whole 2 seconds, till I realize others in the story can rip holes in the air an travel to the other side of the world.

Well, Aludra has many years of experience with the explosive powders and launch tubes already, so it's just a matter of the metallurgy involved, and from the sound of things, she's typical-for-early-attempts over-building the tubes.

Well, Aludra has many years of experience.... True, but so did the Chinese. Doesn't mean they went from Dark Ages, to bad ass in a single lifetime of experience, let alone the few months or so left before the Last Battle, for trial and error. Nor did it all come from one person. (Not sure if the Chinese even were the ones to invent the cannon. Definitely not the ones to perfect it to 19th century standards.) I'm over it though. It must just be that the Creator is giving her ideas, so the DO can't win.

You're all forgetting one important factor. They are not inventing this stuff for the 'first' time. It's all been invented before, in the Age of Legends. While much of that knowledge has been lost, who knows what hasn't been....
