Dunno, probably to make it look less like Go, and make the game a bit more complicated than it really is.
Personally (and i'm just going by memory here) i believe that there's a game called 'Shogi' (kind of like japanese chess) where you can capture your opponent's pieces and use them against him. I think the idea for the Fisher came from there since in Go you can't actually move your stones.

its also based extremely on asia, which invented chess u know the helmets with the cresant moon, japanese is the closest thing with those helms, then katanas since european countries used double edged sword in shape of cross (straight sword with straight crossguard, very religous killer ) oh and people too, just cant think of with country is more asian, need to look it up. so i say about 50/50 on asia and europe.
also, the dragons r based on asian dragon. european dragons R in WOT, just called different and seachan use them
