i couldn't think of a more catchy title so you will have to forgive me when you gain a level you could get plus one added to one of your stats, which stat it gets added to depends on what type of NPC you killed most in the process of gaining the level e.g if i killed more darkhounds than any other NPC while i was level 40 when i got to level 41 +1 taint would be added to my base stats. i think this would result in more varied builds and greater specialisation potential. kind of like the EV system in pokemon

I know nothing about pokemon, but I can live with this if we had a control of whom to kill. For example in ADOM there are some special considerations of whom to kill (not that important though), but you can avoid killing someone. So it's about total PvE redesign IMHO.
